Experience report of a working student at EOS


Over the last few years EOS has employed many working students and accompanied them on their way to the Bachelor or Master. Near completion of his master's thesis, we asked Bernardo Kaminski Küster about his experiences:

“My first contact with EOS GmbH was at the IKOM Career forum, at the Technical University of Munich, where I was pre-selecting the companies that would best fit my profile for a possible internship during my masters courses in mechanical engineering. The company was very well represented and had innovative exposition parts that immediately got not only my attention but the attention of everyone else at the forum, judging by the gathering of students around the stand. The exhibited parts designed with sophisticated features and displaying complex geometries built for the most challenging applications, such as aerospace and medical, influenced my final decision in taking my specialization to this distinguished additive manufacturing process. As I got accepted for the internship and came on site for my first day, I received a tour through the showroom where the various machines were running different processes, polymer or metal, each using its distinct material selection. Back then I had the opportunity to peek inside the process chamber for the first time and witness the laser beam melting the powder bed while generating layer wise the digital based parts. My first assignment was to provide support to the Additive Minds department, inside the AM Engineering Consulting Team responsible for the qualification of the metal manufacturing process. Having done my internship side by side with the process quality specialists gave me a full understanding of the main process parameters and the DMLS process chain. Using familiar tools and methods such as FMEA, FTA and Ishikawa applied specifically to the powder bed process helped me comprehend the role DMLS process plays in fulfilling the statutory and regulatory requirements for the most diverse high-end applications regarding product quality. What makes this experience special, is that my work is now implemented in a Consulting Product, which is being executed on customer site. Since December 2017 I have been happily reassigned as a master student inside the company, instructed to write my master thesis on the medical implants application with focus on process qualification. In the two years that I have been inside the company, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with such an interesting manufacturing process side by side with a highly skilled team."

Which conditions do I need to fulfill to order hardware from the Academia Program?
  • You are a recognized educational institution
  • EOS systems must be used at least 50% of the time when teaching
  • EOS systems are not used for commercial manufacturing purposes
What AM equipment will EOS provide in the Academia Program?
All offerings are for SLS systems (Selective Laser Sintering). In this process, a laser melts the polymer or metal material powder layer by layer. The “Freshman” and “Graduate” packages contain desktop polymer laser sintering systems from Sintratec. With the “Scientist” package you can choose between EOS systems for polymer or metal powders. The prices differ according to the system selected (EOS P 110, EOS P 396, EOS M 290).
What level of investment should my organization expect?
Universities can expect highly favorable conditions for all of the above-mentioned options. The investment in funding or resources for equipment, materials, and training depends on the option selected. EOS has been careful to ensure that institutions with a lower budget gain access to the technology. In addition, educators will be expected to provide feedback on the use of the equipment and promote EOS job postings.
Are there any further requirements for participating universities?
Besides your interest in Additive Manufacturing and the commitment to use the equipment in an educational or research-related topic, there are no requirements you need to fulfill in order to qualify for the Academia Program. Membership in the Academia Program is free and unconditional.
