Krailling, March 1, 2018 – EOS, the world's leading technology supplier in the field of industrial 3D printing of metals and polymers, has successfully expanded its comprehensive sustainability concept practiced at its headquarter in Krailling, Germany to include its site in Maisach-Gernlinden, Germany. In February 2018, the environmental management systems deployed at the two sites were officially validated in accordance with EMAS III standards. The EMAS seal of quality evidences the fact that EOS meets the strict requirements of the European Union's system for sustainable environmental management.

The environmental management system is a key element of EOS' corporate responsibility initiative, which aims to minimize the environmental impacts not only of EOS as a company, but also its products – and thus continually improve the environmental performance of EOS GmbH overall. The environmental statement published by EOS to this effect clearly illustrates which goals the company achieved in the period from October 2016 to September 2017, such as reducing its energy and paper consumption, increasing biodiversity, extending its powder recycling efforts, and the promotion of its ride-sharing scheme.

Embedding sustainability in the organization's structures
For a long time now, EOS has promoted efficient environmental protection measures and therefore drawn up a comprehensive environmental management system in accordance with EMAS and ISO 14001 standards, which collects and analyzes data on all the company's environmental impacts. Together with statutory regulations and other requirements, these measures help to continually improve EOS' environmental performance.

Hella Langer, a member of the EOS owner family, said: “The EOS values fair, responsible, together and excellent form the basis for our corporate and environmental policies. We are committed to fulfilling our social responsibility as a company. In order to effectively practice the EOS environmental policy, we rely on highly committed employees who take an active part in environmental management as well as on close collaboration with both suppliers and customers."

Erich Grünes, authorized EMAS environmental auditor at TÜV Rheinland, said about the recent audit: “I'm very happy that for the second consecutive time EOS has met the strict requirements of the EMAS audit, one of the most exacting systems for ensuring sustainable environmental management worldwide. It is not just about complying with binding obligations, but much more about the genuine, continual improvement of the organization's environmental performance – something that EOS has successfully proven with a broad range of measures tailored to its own corporate situation and a highly committed workforce."

Tangible achievement of environmental targets
EOS purchases only environmentally sustainable paper and significantly reduced its paper consumption by 18 percent compared with fiscal year 2015/16. The substantial saving was achieved firstly by changing the standard print setting to use both sides of each sheet of paper and secondly by no longer printing pay slips, but sending them to employees by e-mail.

Considering its closeness to a nature reserve and to increase biodiversity, EOS has set up numerous nesting boxes for birds and bats as well as so-called insect hotels at its headquarters in Krailling. EOS also intends to develop additional activities to increase biodiversity as part of a trainees' day, which is planned for spring 2018. For several years now, electricity and heating supplies to the EOS buildings in Krailling have been climate-neutral – thanks to a biomass power plant at the company's site and its use of electricity naturally generated from renewable sources.

In March 2017, the customer program for recycling polymer materials was resumed with a new provider. Powder thermally damaged to the degree that makes it unsuitable for producing high-quality components using 3D printing techniques, is disposed of for customers free of charge and reused for other purposes, such as for manufacturing powder coatings. Companies that participate in the program not only benefit financially, but also have the option to leverage the recycling process to improve their own environmental management with regard to ISO 14001 or EMAS standards. A total of 16 companies currently participate within the German-speaking area and the offer is due to be expanded to include further countries over the next few years.

Aimed at reducing the number of cars employees use to drive to work, since June 2017 EOS is financially promoting its ride-sharing scheme on a monthly basis per person. The scheme is further incentivized with specially marked parking spaces reserved in the company's underground car park for ride-sharing vehicles. Moreover, a ride-sharing platform has been established on the EOS intranet to make it easier for staff to find co-workers to share rides. The promotion of ride-sharing is part of the EOS mobility concept, which includes subsidizing tickets for public transport and an e-bike leasing arrangement. At the same time, EOS is working on making sufficient parking space available for employees who rely on their own cars to get to work.
