Beam Shaping: Seven Laser Beam Profiles

The four 1.0 kW beam shaping fiber lasers of the EOS M4 ONYX FLX switch rapidly between seven beam profiles - from a Gaussian profile (index 0) via combined core and ring profiles (index 1-5) to a full ring profile (index 6). The beam diameter ranges from approx. 90 µm (core) to approx. 200 µm (ring), so the energy distribution can be adapted to material, layer thickness and part geometry.

Your benefits with beam shaping:

  • Higher build rates: thicker layers at stable process conditions
  • Cleaner processing: less spatter and fewer process by-products
  • Tailored material properties: control over the microstructure, e.g. from isotropic to anisotropic grain structures in IN718
  • One system, many applications: the right beam profile for each material and process requirement
Seven switchable laser beam profiles – from Gaussian (index 0) to ring (index 6).
Materials & Processes

Materials & Processes

The EOS M4 ONYX FLX combines high-performance hardware with validated material processes. Beam shaping enables increased layer thicknesses and greater control over energy distribution, supporting productive manufacturing and application-specific material properties.

EOS NickelAlloy IN718 - 80 µm and 120 µm

Advanced beam shaping technology enables productivity increases of up to 100%, supported by the ability to increase layer thickness while maintaining high process stability and cleaner processing conditions. Beyond productivity, it offers greater flexibility in tailoring material properties to specific application requirements. For EOS NickelAlloy IN718, this ranges from nearly isotropic grain structure for general industrial applications to controlled anisotropic grains for demanding high-temperature and high-stress applications.

EOS MaragingSteel MS1 - 80 µm

For EOS MaragingSteel MS1, the 80 µm beam shaping process, combined with optimized gas flow, significantly reduces spatter generation and process-related defects, resulting in more stable processing conditions and improved part quality. These improvements enable reliable processing across large exposure areas and during extended build jobs, supporting the demanding requirements of industrial serial production.
