Closely measuring our environmental impact and steadily becoming more sustainable
In an era of climate emergency, doing our part to benefit our environment's well-being and protect all our resources is a must. At EOS, our position as a leader in the additive manufacturing (AM) industry enables us to pursue sustainability within our organization's operations, in product development — as a value add for our customers — and to benefit the communities we live and work in.
Our certified Environmental Management System (DIN EN ISO 14001) reflects our dedication to preserving the environment, minimizing our environmental impact, and continuously improving our processes. As part of our climate responsibility, we have set science-based emissions reduction targets aligned with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. We are committed to contributing to significantly reducing global emissions before 2030 and achieving net-zero before 2050.
The Circular Path to Sustainability and Responsibility
Sustainable production, carefully considered consumption and efficient waste management form the basis for a circular economy: Products and raw materials that — in the past — would've been considered “used up” can instead be converted into new resources. This creates clear economic benefits — not just for the bottom line but also our positioning in the industry.
Our Carbon Footprint
Our Carbon Accounting & Controlling system is a key pillar of integrating climate action into our corporate structure and developing a climate transition plan that outlines the steps we are taking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate science.
Following the GHG Protocol, we systematically calculate emissions across the global EOS Group’s operations as well as our upstream and downstream value chain, ensuring a comprehensive and transparent emissions inventory.
This has allowed us to start the development of a comprehensive climate strategy and set science-based targets in line with the SBTi Net-Zero Standard.
Our sustainability reporting was previously based on the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and we are currently transitioning to the European Sustainability Standard (ESRS), which is based on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This ensures that climate and environmental topics are transparently disclosed in accordance with the latest regulatory requirements.
Our science-based targets
Setting our climate targets marks a significant milestone in our journey toward Responsible Manufacturing.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated and approved our science-based targets. This approval is a testament to our dedication and serves as the foundation for our ongoing and future emission reduction efforts.
“We are proud to embark on the journey of making our contribution to a 1.5-degree future, backed by scientific evidence, while ensuring that our customers can trust we are taking real action on climate change and supporting them on their sustainability path.” Marie Langer, CEO EOS.
Our science-based targets (set against a 2022 base year) for EOS Group include both near-term and net-zero reduction targets:
-
42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions by 2030
-
25% absolute reduction in Scope 3 CO2e emissions by 2030
-
90% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions by 2040
-
90% absolute reduction in Scope 3 CO2e emissions by 2045
Greater Transparency through Life Cycle Assessments
In order to achieve greater transparency about the environmental impact of our products, we carry out life cycle assessments (LCAs) of our products. The cradle-to-gate approach includes all the environmental impacts associated with a product’s production. Assessment categories include water consumption, water pollution and ozone-depleting effects. LCA studies are conducted in accordance with ISO standards 14040:2009 and 14044:2009. We work together with the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics (EMI), in addition we have also trained many of our global employees to become LCA practitioners, which means that we can now carry out the majority of LCA calculations internally.
Material Efficiency and Strategic Reuse
At EOS, we use raw materials sparingly, rely on recycling whenever feasible and develop internal recycling concepts for our material waste. We've also worked with local companies for years to ensure responsible waste disposal.
In Europe, we set up a return cycle to accept disused EOS machines from our customers. Our Sustainability Services department processes the returned 3D printing systems to make them suitable for reuse.
Meanwhile, our powder cycle programs enable our customers in the DACH region as well as globally to return their used powder. While the powder may no longer be suitable for 3D printing, the resulting raw material still has value for other products and applications. Interested?
